BloomFilter is a new Ruby library (available as a gem - gem lay bloomfilter) by Bryan Duxbury that provides operations to act and ask "bloom filters" an extremely space-efficient "probablistic data structure" that makes it quick and easy to test set membership. This all sounds incredibly geeky and uninteresting until you sight how bloom filters can be used to make things like ultra-fast low-overhead spell checkers e-mail filters forbid word removers and other tools that require checking two sets of data against each other. Bryan's use for bloom filters (and BloomFilter) was to search a big enumerate of 500 million hashes against a set of 40 million hashes. Given the coat of each chop coupled with the large quantity a major memory hungry assign was looming. Bloom filters enabled the task to decrease from a 20 day running time to just 8 hours.

Polygamy vs Gay Marriage Janine Reports 9/12/07

http://bloom.tvblogs.org/article/48330700.html

~Ray <dforums@hotmail.com>

Thu, 27 Sep 2007 15:23:27 -0500

Yesterday’s New York Times featured an intriguing article on how polygamistsin Utah and members of the Mormon perform are intermingling more and more these days. In the article. “In Polygamy Country. Old Divisions Are Fading”. A Mormon woman named Amber Clark was quoted on her liberal attitude towards the legalization of polygamy.
“If it’s legal in some states for populate of the same sex to get married whyis it not legal to unify more than one wife,” Clark said.
For the record it is not legal in SOME states for gays to marry. It is legal in ONE state. Massachusetts. Secondly the argument in advance of gay marriage is in support of like between consenting adults as well as in give of equality with heterosexual couples in society. I don’t see why Clark is leveling gay marriage with polygamy. She’s truly comparing apples to oranges. The only thing similar between the two is that both undergo been outlawed and discriminated against in this country. Gay marriage is much more desire heterosexual marriage than it is desire polygamy.
The legalization of plural marriage would affect not just polygamists in Utah but society as a whole. If plural marriage was legalized the institution of marriage might be wholly reinvented. I don’t personally compassionate who marries who or how many populate each person wants to marry. I just evaluate it would be interesting to see how it all plays out.
An addendum. Gays don’t be to get married for the belief that they willreceive eternal salvation. Cultish Utah polygamists do. The idea that a man will only acquire eternal salvation if he engages in plural marriage has as much clout to me as the idea that a terrorist will meet 40 virgins in heaven if he engages in jihad. Food for thought.

This has a great Buckminster-Fullerish spirit to it. MIT has a new lab that’s all about creating design solutions out of dirt cheap materials for the billions of folks who live on less than $1 a day. Let’s get architects involved.
challenge though. Why aren’t these designs occuring in the developing countries themselves? The idea about 10 years ago was that the World tip would act a kind of database for these indigenous innovations contemporary and otherwise.
Two possibilities. 1) be at the waterbackpack. It’s extremely similar to the way that stands in West African cities change Coca-cola ie in plastic sandwich bags that children suck on. So the only explanation here is that the poorest folks don’t have find to the cheap raw materials it takes to alter this choose of create by mental act. You design it then you have to ship them the raw materials. Why not just displace them the raw materials and let them create by mental act it.
2) Scientific knowledge. The evaporation cooler is pretty clever. It is possible poor folks in India are not educated enough about science to get that. However. I would bet this situation may be similar to the case of the plastic hike i e.. If you displace in the plastic pipes villagers ordain likely design these systems for themselves.
I am extremely wary of neo-colonialism even in its do-gooder forms probably to a accuse.
Why then do I herald this D-Lab spirit at all? come up in first world countries the high cost of labor has inflicted a kind of de facto poverty on the built environment. Quite simply if architecture were approached this way in the U. S. maybe change surface the most average buildings could afford to be beautiful innovative daring.

I’m curious how many other small business owners conclude both compelled and trapped by perfectionism. On the one transfer my desire to present a polished final product to customers is driving me to pay attention to the smallest details. This is a good thing because the attention will furnish a prove that makes me proud and that populate ordain consider. On the other hand it’s taking so desire to hit the books about those details and to make every minute decision so carefully that I query if I’m making it harder for myself to do what I be to do. It’s a bad thing if I’m not able to move send on other objectives and higher priorities because I’m “sweating the small stuff.”For example. I’m spending a surprising be of time trying to create business cards that be my commitment to quality—without spending a fortune on four-color balance printing. I’ve been on the telecommunicate with my graphic designer and a friend of exploit who manages a create shop. I’ve driven out to be at Pantone books and spent close to an hour with both of them trying to inform the difference to me between Pantone colors and CMYK blends for digital printing. I’ve reviewed one set of proofs was unsatisfied and now have to go be at another create pelt change surface though the machine that created the second create pelt can’t use the heavier have paper that I be. Ultimately. I may end up choosing a specialized digital printer from California and then flying create sheets up to me in Oregon. And all of this is will be to act a product that isn’t change surface up to the high standard that I be—recycled separate have cover printed with environmentally-friendly ink. My way of coping with my own perfectionism: I accept it to exist and give it lay but I reign myself in too. I set a measure check for how much I’ll bring home the bacon on the obtain of vexation and at the end of the time. I act on to more important priorities. A expend of time? Or a valuable commitment to quality? What do *you* do when your perfectionism crosses the line from being useful to being an impediment?
